FAUX LOCS HAIRSTYLE; Installation and Types of Hair to Use

This is a protective hairstyle similar to box braids that temporary gives you the illusion of real locs by completely covering your hair. It is easy to create either at home or by a stylist. It is created by wrapping synthetic human hair around natural hair.

Faux Locs can be installed by two methods;

  1. Braid and wrap method

It involves braidin it hig your natural hair then wrapping the synthetic hair extension around each braid.

  1. Cornrow and crochet method

In this method, you first create cornrows using your natural hair  then crochet the faux locs using a latch hook.

How Faux Locs are Installed

Requirements

  • Rat-tail comb
  • Latch hook (when using the crochet method)
  • The synthetic hair
  • Moisturizer

Step 1: section you hair into a small section and apply moisturizer.

Step 2: braid the section you created in section 1 using a small portion of hair braids or using your natural hair.

Step 3: place a thick strand of braiding hair behind the braid you made in step two to give you three strands of hair.

Step 4: braid the three strands across each other until there is no more of the braid you made in step two. Continue with the other two strands of your synthetic hair for a few stitches then stop.

Step 5: Add a new strand of synthetic hair to the top of your braided hair.

Step 6: Wrap the synthetic hair around the braid from the root of the braid in step four and continue downwards to the end.

Step 7: by the help of scissors, trim the synthetic hair at the ends to give you your desirable length.

Step 8: seal the ends of the synthetic hair with a lighter. If using fire freaks you out, use a drop of nail glue to seal the ends instead.

Step 9: repeat the process for the rest of your hair.

Types of Hair Extensions Used to Make Faux Locs

You can either use synthetic braiding hair or human hair. Most people prefer synthetic braiding hair because it is more affordable compared to human hair.

The following are types of hair you can use to make faux locs;

  1. Marley Hair

It is the most preferred hair to make faux locs because of its coarse texture. However, they can be a little more expensive than other extensions used to create faux locs. Marley hair braids can be used to create other hairstyles like spring twists and box braids.

  1. Kanekalon Hair.

The normal hair braids can be used to create faux locs using the braid and wrap method. Creating Faux Locs using normal braids can take upto ten hours.

Wrapping Up

The difference between faux locs and goddess locs is that faux locs have a straight end while goddess locs have curly and wavy ends.

To ensure that faux locs are protective of your natural hair, ensure that you do not install them too tight.

Faux locs can last up to 3 months. You should however not wear the style for that long. I would recommend you wear the style to a maximum of 8 weeks to avoid the risk of your natural hair becoming matted or locked.
